British cellphone company Vodafone confirmed Friday that it is selling its Italian business to Switzerland’s Swisscom for 8 billion euros ($8.7 billion) and will hand back half of the proceeds to its shareholders through the buyback of company shares. Vodafone said the move, with talks first announced Feb. 28, represented an “attractive valuation” and marked the final step of its strategy to sell off parts of its European portfolio. Swisscom, a telecoms operator, will pay in cash that it will finance through new debt.

ZURICH/LONDON (Reuters) -Swisscom said on Friday it would buy Vodafone Italia for 8 billion euros ($8.7 billion) and merge the business with its Italian subsidiary Fastweb in the latest round of consolidation in Europe's most competitive telecoms markets. The deal follows the merger of French mobile operator Orange's Spanish business with rival MasMovil, that was approved earlier this week, and Vodafone selling its Spanish unit to Zegona Communications last October. Swiss government-controlled Swisscom said the all-cash deal would be debt financed.

Telecoms operator Swisscom confirmed Wednesday it's in talks with Vodafone Group toward a possible purchase of its Italian subsidiary for 8 billion euros ($8.65 billion). The Swiss company, which is majority owned by the Swiss government, said in a statement it's in “advanced exclusive negotiations” to buy all of Vodafone Italia and merge it with Swisscom's Italian subsidiary, Fastweb. Swisscom says it expects the purchase, if concluded, would add value and cash flow to the Swiss company and help improve its dividend policy.
